During this past year  the Columbia U. Buddhist Study Seminar had a speaker
(sorry, forget who it was) give a fascinating presentation with wonderful
slides on Japanese Buddhist map making.
All the maps had Mt. Meru in the middle. Some of the later maps, 17th and
18th century had North and South America seemingly stuck on with only the
vaguest notions of size and place or if they were connected to each other.
