Dear Dan,

I think the reason why you were needlessly led astray here is because the 
misleading way in which the term was translated and unfamiliarity with the 
context.  As you may realize now, these eight have nothing to do with the 8 
vimok.sas -- I belive that they are mentioned in the Gandavyuha and 
Ratna-guna-sancaya as the a.s.ta-ak.sa.na-viniv.rtti or variants.  FYI, the 
ten favourable circumstances are called the da'sa-sampad.
