[Buddha-l] Administrivia concerning old and new buddha-l

Dear denizens of the new buddha-l,

As of yesterday, the old buddha-l is defunct. All the members have been
erased, and it is set up so that no new members can subscribe and no
non-members can mail messages. The nice folks in Louisville say we can
keep the archives there for a while, so you can still check them out.
You just can't reply to anything that is there. You can visit the old
archives at www.louisville.edu/it/listserv/archives/buddha-l.html .
Efforts are underway to migrate them to the new site, but I'm not sure
it will work. Please stay tuned.

If you haven't done so already, please make sure you delete the address
buddha-l at listserv.louisville.edu from your address book. If you'd like
to have buddha-l in your address book, the new address is buddha-
l at mailman.swcp.com.

The citizens of buddha-l are exceptionally well-behaved, and flame wars
are almost unknown in these hallowed halls. The principal reason for
moderation on the old list was to keep down spam, which we were
receiving with increasing regularity. The new buddha-l has a number of
good mechanisms in place to prevent spam, so moderation is less
necessary. For that reason, I am gradually setting things up so that our
regular posters can post directly, without going through the moderation
process. If you are a regular poster and find you are still being
moderated, please don't take offense. Please be patient, knowing that
I'll get around to changing your settings eventually.

At the risk of boring you with details, buddha-l is now set up so that
new subscribers are automatically moderated. When someone has posted
several messages and is keeping within the spirit of buddha-l, the
moderators will change that person's settings to no-moderation mode. If
anyone does show signs of being out of hand, we can set their account
back to moderation mode. "Out of hand" means being personally abusive to
another subscriber.

When replying to another post, PLEASE be mindful about quotations from
the post you are responding to. Cut out everything except the specific
passage to which you are making a reply. Please do not "top post" (which
consists in writing a line or two in reaction to an entire message left
intact). People who repeatedly top-post run the risk of being deemed
"out of hand" and hence moderatable (moderable?).

Thanks for all your co-operation. And thanks to all of you who have been
posting such excellent messages recently. It's a pleasure to see so many
thoughtful messages coming in.
