Dan et al.,

I was a bit surprised to read Dan quoting that Reps story (which I 
presume originally comes from his co-author, Nyogen Senzaki Roshi) 
without comment. In fact, Dan writes that this is a "well known story 
about Hakuin."

Dan, I presume you mean "well known story about" in the sense of 
"something lots of folks tell about," not in the sense of "something we 
know about." I don't recall it from Hakuin's own writings and it's just 
the kind of great story Zen likes to tell about itself; perhaps too 
good to be true, right? Or do you have reason to suspect its veracity?
