This is no longer true in the part of the world where I live, nor has it
been for quite some time. In courts of law one can now simply promise to
tell the truth, or if one wishes to indulge the court's appetite for
superstition, one can swear on a Bible, a Qur'an, a Bhagavad-gita, a
Dhammapada, an Adi-granth or, I shouldn't wonder, the complete works of
Harry Potter.
