I can find little evidence of a time when pervasive consumer culture  
didn't replace whatever might have been previous values. As far back  
as I can find comments on the xmas holidays folks have been  
complaining.  I reckon that is why there are fundamentalist sects that  
refuse to celebrate any holidays at all.
