Actually most Australians aren't descended from the convicts.  Many of our 
ancestors were immigrants from Europe, China and America who came over 
because of the gold and copper discoveries in the 1850s and others were 
free-settlers. Many more Europeans etc came over after that and so it 
continues today. But, hey, why let facts get in the way of a good story!

But it's probably true that we are "extremely recalcitrant and unmannerly", 
especially when someone says that we are all descended from convicts.
