One suspects the common Latin root is "gremium," which means a lap or  
a womb. Now the only mysteries remaining to be solved are 1) why does  
a word meaning a lap or a womb come to mean a committee or a guild,  
and 2) why would an  American anthropologist think that laps and wombs  
are unmentionable?
