You might want to check out "Buddha's Child: My Fight To Save Vietnam" 
by Nguyen Cao Ky. It will give you a perspective that you are unlikely 
to obtain from other sources. Used copies can be obtained for <$1 + 
shipping.

Also, if you have cable or satellite you might be able to find American 
Vietnamese programming (which at least sometimes is subtitled in 
English), which will also provide invaluable cultural insights. I have 
stumbled upon such things while channel surfing.
