The Ratnagotravibhaaga is the source for another theory of refuge. It
affirms that the principal refuge is the Buddha and that from an ultimate
point of view the Buddha is the only refuge. This is so because of the
Buddha's dharmakaaya. In fact, what it is saying is that the ultimate refuge
is the dharmakaaya. The other refuges are upaaya. With this in mind, I asked
my initial question to Dan about what actually makes refuge work.
