DHARMSALA, India (AP) — Indian officials are questioning aides to Tibetan
Buddhism's third most important leader after discovering more than a million
dollars in a range of foreign currencies in his headquarters in northern
India.

Phuntsok Lama, a Gyuto Tantric Monastery official, said Tuesday that police
and revenue authorities were searching the monastery and questioning staff
at the home of Ugyen Thinley Dorje, the 17th Karmapa.

Authorities are investigating the source of nearly $1.35 million in Indian
rupees and foreign currencies, including Chinese yuan, found in the
monastery over the weekend.

They have not revealed why they targeted the Buddhist holy man, a potential
successor to the Dalai Lama as head of the Tibetan movement.

The Karmapa mysteriously escaped from Tibet in 2000.
