...Is mother-child imagery associated with metta in the Pali Canon?
Metta, JON

Don't have an answer for this question, but I do know that in Thailand, where Buddhism is based on the Pali canon, in popular culture the Buddha is often addressed as mother--as in headboard paintings on trucks of the Buddha under the bodhi tree, together with inscription that addresses him as mother--or at least that's what I was told by a Thai acquaintance (I don't read Thai).
