I would suggest that a good starting point is:
O’Grady, Paul. 2003. ‘From Lhasa to Rome: Williams’s Unexpected Way’.
Contemporary Buddhism 4.2: 159-67

O'Grady is a Catholic and also has some interesting comments from that
point of view.
