The Routledge Encyclopedia of Buddhism is a one-volume reference work
that documents the history, doctrines, school, rituals, sacred places, ideas
and concepts, and globalization of Buddhism. The volume facilitates further
research by providing bibliographic references to the leading
scholarship and as such the editors hope it will become an indispensable tool
for students, teachers, and researchers from a wide range of disciplinary
backgrounds, as well as to the general reader.

The editors have worked hard to make this volume distinctive. Their aim
was not just to produce another reference work on Buddhism, but to be
innovative in adopting a new format and methodology that would make this work
stand out amongst its rivals. To this end they assembled a dedicated team of
over twenty leading specialists in different fields of Buddhist Studies, and
asked them to take responsibility for both determining the key subjects
of interest within their individual fields and writing the corresponding
entries on those topics. The contributors (who simultaneously
constituted the Advisory Board to the project) then determined how best to
meet the requirement for coverage of these topics in relation to their own
areas of expertise.

An important objective of this volume was to provide substantive
in-depth coverage of key areas, as opposed to wide but superficial coverage
after the fashion of a dictionary. For this reason there are no entries in the
present work of less than 500 words, and each key subject area (for example,
those involving major Buddhist schools and traditions) is introduced by a 5000
word overview entry which gives a comprehensive and detailed introduction to
the topic.

The Routledge Encyclopedia of Buddhism contains approximately 1000
pages of text and 339 entries which, in almost half a million words, cover the
entire Buddhist tradition. In addition the volume includes a chronology of
Buddhist history, a Glossary, photographs and graphics, and an extensive
