Just a plug for a good book by a travel writer:

Nine Lives: In Search of the Sacred in Modern India
by W. Dalrymple

There's a great story about a Tibetan monk who fled in 1959
--only to wind up in the Indian Army for an entire career.
That story was circulated separately about 8 months back.
The book opens with a fascinating story about a Jain nun
whose co-nun friend performed the sallekhana ritual. Beyond
the Tibetan monk's take, not much about Buddhism.

best,
Tim Cahill
