You had me at "I was dissatisfied with the tendency to present Indian 
philosophers as members of schools." But then you're elaboration on that 
basic point just kept getting better and better. And then you bring in 
Nicholson, whom I am more than a little ashamed to say I've never heard 
of. But then you kept going and went where few dare to go: questioning 
not just the holy cow of "indian schools" but the very separation 
between Buddhism and Hinduism itself.

"Subhuti, well said, well said. Subhuti, it is so; it is so." That is to 
say, "Huzzah! And again I say: Huzzah!"

It was because of their work that Uddyotakara was no longer just good old Uddyotakara but a staunch defender of the Nyāya school of philosophy against the godless Buddhists. I recommend Nicholson's book. It is fun to read, well written and learned, and on almost every page I learn something that makes me feel a little ashamed that I had not known it before.
