I believe mtshan, even without an additional -ma or -nyid, can mean: naama;
nimitta; raatrau (or raatri); or vya~njana. If so, like xiang, it doesn't
let us narrow down between laksana and nimitta, but, as you say, it puts us
in the right ballpark.
