Hello Joanna

Thank you for the article. This both interesting and strange that women are
prohibited. On a trip to Burma I noticed a few pagoda also prohibitted women
in certain areas. When I questioned a Burmese about this, he said it related
to menstration.

Also interesting is that this structure cost $22,000,000 to complete!

Regards

Bankei

Greetings Bankei,

Yes, the same might be the case with the Mumbai pagoda's restriction.

All that money is nothing for Sri Goenka, who is very rich, and no doubt has
a list of equally wealthy donors. But I was bemused by one detail: it is
built of stones, not with reinforced steel, etc. One wonders what might
happen during an earthquake. Stones aren't much better than kiln-fired
bricks when it comes to earthquakes. But also, a lot of concrete and
reinforced steel cosntruction in world earthquake zones has been so shoddily
done that big buildings collapse anyway.
Best, Joanna
