I think you may be stuck in the 1970s, Dan. I have not seen much evidence of

anti-capitalist leanings in Western Buddhists since about the time of the 
Watergate break-ins. It seems to me that most of us abandoned our visions of

Communist Utopias at about the same time. As one of my old friends from the 
60s once put it "A lot of things changed when heroin became the drug of 
choice instead of LSD."

But a lot of us haven't abandoned notions of mixed-economy socialism. Yet so
far the only countries who've done it are the Scandinavian countries. When
the USSR was breaking up, I naively figured that coming out of state
corporate capitalism (passed off as 'communism')as they did, they would go
for mixed economies where the social contract is maintained, despite the
presence of some industries and high taxes. But no--the USSR devolved into
robber-baronism. The only benefit I can see from that result is that
Buddhists in eastern Russia got rid of state interference and can now
practice their religions freely.
