It turns out that the Karmapa had been formally recognized by the 
Chinese government, who thought they would be able to control him. But 
then after years of being politically groomed by the Chinese occupiers 
in Tibet, the Karmapa (who speaks Chinese fluently) managed to escape 
from Tibet and make his way to Dharamsala.
