But you see: they cannot even take their own lives, or the lives
of other humans, seriously enough to at least exercise restraint,
if nothing more constructive.  Multinational capitalism has
destroyed almost everything moral or cultural in its path except
for greedy desires for consumer stuff,  lifestyle, more money,
and the power (no matter how gained) to control as much of these
as possible.

Or to put it another way; people need to take Buddhism seriously
enough not to let their unregenerate bad habits discredit and
destroy it.
