It is more or less exactly what happened in Mongolia. I suspect that in 
both cases it was in part the strength of Buddhism which led to extreme 
violence from Marxists.

And the opportunity for it to occur was due to misguided/imperialist 
interference by Vietnam, the U.S.A. and China.
