That means that your email reader is probably set to Western European (ISO). That's fine for most things, but to see Sanskrit diacriticals, you will need to have the email open, find the setting on your program that allows you to set the "encoding" (it could be in the Edit menu, for instance), and reset that from Western European (ISO) to UTF-8. The a with the line over it should appear. Instant enlightenment!

If that works, try it on Richard's message and see what, if anything it does to his vyapti.
